Murray and Lendl end coaching relationship

LONDON — Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has parted ways with coach Ivan Lendl following a fruitful two-year relationship.

Murray and Lendl announced their decision Wednesday on the British player’s blog, a few days after Murray lost in the fourth round at Indian Wells.

Murray, who returned from back surgery this season, said, “I’m eternally grateful to Ivan for all his hard work over the past two years, the most successful of my career so far.”

With Lendl, Murray won Olympic gold in London in 2012 and the U.S. Open title later the same year before becoming the first British player to triumph at Wimbledon in 77 years.

Ex-NBA player Wallace sentenced in wreck case

HENRICO, Va. — Former NBA standout Ben Wallace will spend two days in jail after pleading no contest in Virginia to failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Online court records show Wallace entered the plea Tuesday in Henrico General District Court following his arrest.

The Richmond resident received a one-year jail sentence with all but two days suspended. He also must pay a $500 fine.

Henrico police tell media outlets that a car driven by Wallace ran off the road on Feb. 8, went through a wooden fence and hit a tree. The driver left the scene before police arrived.

Wallace was a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a standout at Virginia Union University. He played with five NBA teams, including two stints with the Detroit Pistons.

US defender Cherundolo ends career

HANNOVER, Germany — United States national team defender Steve Cherundolo is ending his career immediately because of persistent knee problems.

Cherundolo told reporters Wednesday that several knee injuries in the last 15 months made it impossible to continue and that he was moving into a coaching role. The 35-year-old American played a club-record 302 Bundesliga games for Hannover and took part in three World Cups for the United States.

Cherundolo had two operations on his left knee last year and made only two appearances for Hannover this season.

He will remain with the club as assistant coach for Hannover’s under-23 team.

Man U reaches Champions League quarters

MANCHESTER, England — Robin van Persie scored a hat trick as Manchester United beat Olympiakos 3-0 to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Champions League, overturning a 2-0 deficit from the first leg.

The Netherlands striker converted a penalty in the 25th minute, side-footed home his second goal in first-half injury time and curled in a free kick in the 52nd, completing a stirring second-leg comeback.

It was a massive result for United manager David Moyes, whose position had come under scrutiny after Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 loss to Liverpool in the Premier League.
